For people interested in High Royds (Menston Asylum) There is an event on Tuesday 23rd February at 6pm where I will be joining Anna in a sort of ‘in conversation’ about the differences between the real and the fictionalised former institution at Waterstones in Bradford. Entry is free but spaces are limited so please ring Waterstones on 01274 723127 to reserve a seat. There is a special deal where you can have a hot drink, a cake and a copy of the book for £15. A similar deal is available in relation to my books too.
Details on this book below..
The forthcoming novel by Anna Hope called The Ballroom which is set in a fictionalised version of Menston Asylum and released on February 11. Hannah talks at length in the acknowledgements of how inspired she was by both my books (The West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum Through Time and Voices from the Asylum) on the subject.
Where love is your only escape ….
1911: Inside an asylum at the edge of the Yorkshire moors,
where men and women are kept apart
by high walls and barred windows,
there is a ballroom vast and beautiful.
For one bright evening every week
they come together
When John and Ella meet
It is a dance that will change
two lives forever.
Set over the heatwave summer of 1911, the end of the Edwardian era, THE BALLROOM is a tale of unlikely love and dangerous obsession, of madness and sanity, and of who gets to decide which is which.
